Silverado Duramax Turbo Diesel Announced
Chevrolet never holds back, especially when it comes to making their Silverado better year after year. In 2020, the Chevrolet Silverado is going to be featuring a 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo Diesel. This engine completely redefines your expectations of what an engine, and specifically, a diesel engine can do. This engine offers you more choice than ever before, and gives you class-leading torque and horsepower, with a focus on capability and fuel economy. This is the first engine an inline-6 turbo-diesel is being offered with a light-duty Chevrolet truck. For that reason alone, the Duramax is worth learning more about. The engineers at Chevrolet started fresh with this design, and created a turbo-diesel that beats out all of the competition. If you’re interested in learning more about this engine, keep reading down below!
How innovative is this engine?
The architecture that makes up this Duramax is unprecedented and offers refinement alongside smart technology choices. These choices help to optimize truck experience, improve weight, and increase efficiency. The lightweight aluminum block and cylinder head work to reduce the overall mass, while an Active Thermal Management system enhances cold-weather warm-up and efficiency. Thanks to the addition of ceramic glow plugs, there will be shorter heat-up times, along with a quicker start in the cold. Furthermore, this engine benefits from a water charge air cooler, which helps to reduce time to torque, especially when coupled with a low-pressure EGR. Beyond that, the variable geometry turbocharger gives you the perfect balance when it comes to performance.
Can you tell me about the cylinder head and camshaft?
Thanks to the overhead camshafts, there is a direct and efficient means of operating the valves. Those four valves are activated by maintenance-free finger followers, which includes hydraulic lash adjusters. This increases airflow in and out of the engine. All of this is integrated into this Duramax, which is also topped with a lightweight composite cam cover to incorporate crankcase ventilation. There is a pair of assembled camshafts, which drivetrain is located in the rear of the engine to help create greater refinement.
What other technology highlights are there?
We’ve already talked about a lot of technology that is found with this engine, but there are so many unique pieces that work together to make the Duramax so successful. Some of these features include a variable geometry turbocharger, a low-pressure EGR, a variable intake manifold, a variable-pressure oiling system, oil jets, Active Thermal Management, common rail direct fuel injection, an electronic throttle valve, ceramic glow plugs, and stop/start technology.
We’re incredibly excited about this turbo-diesel engine for the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado! This piece of technology just further cements the Silverado as the best truck on the market today. Check out our entire new inventory as we prepare for the Duramax turbo-diesel to make its way to dealerships!
